Scope and Contents

Contains military documents, artifacts, a scrapbook kept by Gene's mother, notes, technical manuals, ephemera, and other papers relating to the military service in the U.S. Navy of E. Gene Shumway during World War II. Artifacts include a pilot's helmet. Also contains papers related to Gene's career as a sociologist and professor, including his dissertation, memos and letters, and retirement speeches. Dated approximately 1940 to 2006.

Incoming correspondence to Harris from other family and friends. Includes letters received by Harris L. Vincent from siblings, aunts and uncles, and friends.

Incoming from Harris’s Parents includes letters and greeting cards to Harris L. Vincent from Harris L. Vincent’s parents in Salt Lake City, Utah, Daniel Harris and Hulda Amelia Nilsson Vincent. Because Harris L. Vincent’s father worked for KSL Radio in Salt Lake City, Utah, much of the correspondence in the collection appears on KSL Radio stationary.

Contains three journals kept by Elder Vincent over the course of his mission to Tonga. The first journal, 1937-1938, is 256 pages; the second journal, 1938-1940, is 146 pages; the third journal, 1940, is 127 pages.

Includes trunk used by Elder Vincent on his mission to Tonga. The trunk is monogrammed with Vincent’s initials, “HLV,” and measures 18 x 10 x 12 inches.
